Curveball Tips

The curveball can be a lethal weapon in a pitchers arsenal. The curveball is typically used as a swing and miss strikeout pitch. Once a pitcher is able to throw their curveball for strikes and also learn how to bury it when they need a strikeout they become very tough to hit. The pitchers that throw a true 12 to 6 breaking curveball are normally guys with three quarters, high three quarters or over the top arm slots. Guys with a low three quarters arm slot normally have a tougher time getting over top of the pitch and the break is more 10-4 or three quarters break. All breaks can be effective as long as the break is sharp and the break has good depth. Some guys throw their curveballs only like 10-11 mph off their fastball with shorter break which is considered more of a power curve. A traditional curve is about 13-18 mph off the fastball with longer break. The video below will break down how to grip the curveball and how to properly throw one.
